This Old Habitat takes students on a field trip around the Chicago metropolitan area to visit several native habitats, including prairie, oak savanna, and wetlands. While exploring these habitats, student guides and scientists touch upon many ecological concepts including habitat, interdependence, communities, and invasive species. This Old Habitat also shows students and scouts working to restore native habitats by clearing brush and collecting seeds.
Because of the topics covered and real-life examples of restoration work being done by students, this video is a useful tool for anyone involved with habitat restoration projects or for a unit on interdependence. The video gives educators and students a sense of what restoration work is all about. To expand the usefulness of This Old Habitat, a set of classroom activities has been developed to accompany the video. The activities can extend, supplement or replace an existing curriculum.
