Life’s Origin

Early Earth’s environment was quite harsh. Volcanoes poured lava and released gases from deep inside the planet, making the atmosphere unbreathable.

In this hostile environment, how did life begin? Scientists have two theories: 1) organic compounds came from meteorites that bombarded the planet, or 2) organic compounds formed in underwater vents.

These fossils help provide scientists with clues as to life’s origins on Earth.
